This holiday season, you can help your neighbours in Delta and Tsawwassen feel less alone on their journey with grief. Our programs are free of charge, open to all and offer a safe space to share, learn and grow together in life after loss.
Neighbours like Warner.
In the weeks and months that followed the traumatic loss of his 17-year old daughter, Warner remembers feeling so alone.
In his struggle to find his footing, Warner reached out to us at Heron Hospice Society.
Warner began with individual counselling, and then he was welcomed into our Grief Group. These free, six-session support groups are led by a professional counsellor and two volunteers who have their own personal experience with loss.
While it felt scary and vulnerable at first, hearing the stories and experiences of others on their own journey with grief made Warner feel less alone.
The connections forged in those sessions, particularly with other parents, were a lifeline during an impossibly difficult time.
Today, five years into his healing journey, Warner is now the one welcoming people into the room. As a trained Heron Hospice volunteer, Warner hosts two Grief Groups per year. He listens, shares and holds space for others' grief, sadness and anger.
Warner uses this opportunity to give back as a way to honour and remember his daughter.
He looks forward to the sessions as time he spends communing with her. By acknowledging his own feelings about loss, he knows he can support and help others.
